ImPACT

Greetings!

Indiana Sports Concussion Network is a group of physicians, psychologists, athletic trainers, athletic directors, and high school personnel who are dedicated to increasing awareness about concussion and preventing the possibility for Second Impact Syndrome and other permanent brain injuries. We are very excited about this opportunity for Indiana’s high school athletes. A health organization has donated  baseline ImPACT tests (computer neurocognitive tests- like a “video game”) for all Indiana high school athletes participating in IHSAA sanctioned sports. There is no fee for the school to sign up for this program or to obtain the baseline tests. The baseline tests can be administered at the school in a “group setting” such as a computer lab here at North.

This program provides baseline ImPACT tests for your high school athletes. These baseline tests are stored in a database online. If you later suspect that an athlete has sustained a concussion, the athlete should be seen by an ImPACT trained physician to take a post-injury test and receive a thorough evaluation. The results of the post-injury test are compared to the baseline results to determine the extent of the injury and the healing that has occurred. The physician will determine when the athlete’s brain has completely healed and when it is safe for the athlete to return to play. The physician visits and post-injury tests are not included in this program, but most insurance companies have been covering the costs just like any other physician office visit.
